Rhythmic Etude No. 3

Here's the 3rd etude for this month!

In this blog, we will learn yet another 16 bar etude, divided into 2 sections (A & B) of 8 bars and repeating each section twice. Giving us a total of 32 bars.

Similar to the previous blogs, we will be combining quarter, eighth, and sixteenth notes.

Let's get started.

Few Things To Consider

Usually when we sing rhythms, the "tah" syllable is most commonly used. But when we end up with quicker subdivisions, it gets harder to sing them that way.

In such cases, we can subdivide these beats in the following way:

  1. Quarter Note = Ta

  2. Eighth Notes = Ta - Ka

  3. Sixteenth Notes = Ta - Ka - Dhi - Mi

While performing these rhythms, I encourage you to try and incorporate these syllables in order to make them simpler for you.

As far as the repeat signs are concerned, take note that, incase of Repeat Start, the dots are on the right side.

And in case of Repeat End, the dots are on the left side.

To keep things simple, you need to perform the A section twice and then the B section twice and end it there.

Let's get on with the etude now!

How To Practice?

Follow these steps to make the most out of this etude:

  1. Perform this without your instrument, using a metronome at comfortable speed. Either, tap your foot/fingers, or clap to perform.

  2. Choose any note on your instrument, and play that note by incorporating these rhythms.

  3. Try to compose/improvise a solo by incorporating these rhythmic ideas.

  4. Create your own etude/piece of music by embelishing/re-arranging these.
