How To Read Chord Diagrams?

Updated: Aug 30, 2022

One of the most common ways us guitar players learn, is using chord diagrams.

It's a staple in guitar education.

In this blog, we will have a quick look at how to read chord diagrams for beginners.

Lines

Here, we have a G diminished triad in it's 1st inversion.

The vertical lines represent the 6 strings of the guitar. The absolute left line being the 6th string, or the Low 'E' string. And the absolute right represents the 1st string, or the High 'E' string.

The horizontal lines represent the frets on the guitar.

Frets, Dots And Fingers

'2fr' refers to the fret number. Based on this, you will be counting the rest of the frets in the diagram.

The numbers within the dots refer to the the notes you need to hold. In this particular case, the number within the dots refer to your finger number.
