Dorian b2 (Melodic Minor Mode No.2)

Continuing with the series of blogs related to the Jazz Melodic Minor, this post will focus on Dorian b2.

As the name suggests, this scale is simply a dorian scale with a 'flattened' 2nd. This scale also happens to be the 2nd mode of the melodic minor scale.

 

What Is Dorian b2?


As mentioned earlier, the dorian b2 scale is simply a dorian scale but with a 'flattened' 2nd, which also happens to be the 2nd mode of the melodic minor scale.


Intervallic Analysis


Let's visualise the difference between the major scale, dorian scale, and the dorian b2 taking C as our root:
