Where To Start? What To Learn? What To Play?

Updated: Aug 29, 2022

It's very common for beginners to feel confused about the following:

  • Where to start?

  • What to learn?

  • What to play?

The former months/years for students is crucial for developing strong fundamental knowledge and understanding of any musical language.

Keeping aside the fact, that every student may have different goals depending on what inspired them to pick up their instrument in the first place, learning music, just like any language, requires some fundamental elements that should be internalised in order to gain a comprehensive knowledge of music in later years of the journey.

In this blog, I will be specifically talk about the fundamentals of music related to the western musical system.

Reading Staff Notation

Yes, I know, you probably hate me already for saying this, but just bear with me for a bit.

In a lot of cases, speaking a language is not always enough. We need to be able to write them down in some form, giving us some advantages:

  • Having a visual representation of it.

  • A methodic approach to creating sentences and stories.

  • A common ground for communicating with others.

In western music, specifically in Classical and Jazz music, knowledge of staff notation is considered to be an important skill to have.

It can be overwhelming, but it actually makes life much simpler as a professional musician once you get the hang of it.

And, it also makes it much easier for students to learn new tunes or new musical concepts and eventually develop themselves into better composers or improvisers.

Understanding Intervals

Some would argue that intervals are the single most important concept to internalise in music. I agree with it.

You see, no matter what kind of music you listen to, every piece of melody is literally a combinaton of musical intervals.

So, I don't think I need to explain why this concept is important.

Articulation & Dynamics

Listen to any good musician, a singer, guitarist, violin player, saxophone player, does not matter. If they are good, they have good control over articulation and dynamics.

Why? Well, technically speaking, that's how you add some actual emotion to the intervals we spoke about above, creating a musical phrase/melody.

You can know all of music theory, but without emotions of any sort, your melody may not reach it's full musical potential.
